Which MacBook A1181 Models Can Run Which Operating Systems?

The MacBook A1181 designation was used for several years, resulting in a wide range of capabilities across its eight generations. When it comes to running different operating systems, some A1181 MacBooks can only run up to OS X 10.7.5, while others can support later versions.

Early and Mid 2009 Models

The only A1181 MacBooks that can run OS X 10.8 or later are the Early and Mid 2009 models. These machines have the capability to install and run later versions of macOS.

Earlier Generation Limitations

MacBook generations before the original MacBook1,1 Core Duo 1.83-2GHz model will only run up to OS X 10.7. If you're looking to upgrade your RAM for one of these machines, it's best to opt for 4GB+2GB instead of 2x4GB. Later generations have a chipset limitation that prevents them from recognizing more than 6GB of installed RAM.

Other Limitations

If your MacBook is either the Mid 2007 generation (May-November 2007/EMC 2139/2.0 or 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo/Intel GMA950) or the Late 2006 generation (November 2006-May 2007/EMC 2121/1.83 or 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo/Intel GMA950), you can install up to 4GB of RAM, but the machine will only recognize 3GB.
